Blue crabs are one of the most recognizable varieties of shellfish. Commercial fisheries exist along much of the Atlantic coast of the United States, and in the Gulf of Mexico. In the past two decades, the majority of commercial crabs have been landed in four states: Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, and Louisiana.
The Great White Shark is also a species of the large mackerel shark. They can be found in the coastal surface waters of all the major oceans! The adult Great White is notable for its size. The females can be much larger exceeding 20 ft in length and can weigh in at 4200 lbs at maturity. However, most are smaller. The lifespan of a great white shark is estimated to be as long as 70 years or more. They can swim at speeds over 35 mph.
The Mackerel is among the most sought after game fish from North Carolina to Texas. They are known for their speed and are caught mostly by trolling. They are an important species to the commercial and recreational fishing. The King Mackerel is the largest of the Mackerel species; it can grow up to 66 inches.
The Mako Shark is a large mackerel shark known as the fastest swimming shark. The average length of the adult Mako is 10 ft in length and can weigh between 132 - 298 lbs. However, the females can be much larger exceeding 12 ft in length and can weigh 1260 lbs.
Shrimp are widespread, and can be found near the seafloor of most coasts and estuaries, as well as in rivers and lakes. There are numerous species, and usually there is a species adapted to any particular habitat. They play important roles in the food chain and are an important food source for larger animals ranging from fish to whales. Shrimp are widely caught and farmed for human consumption.
The Yellow Fin Tuna is a Deepwater fish. It is one of the larger tuna species and can reach over 400 lbs. Yellow fin tuna are a popular sport fish and usually travels in schools. They are known for their speed and strength.
Sailfish are predominantly blue to gray in colour and have a characteristic erectile dorsal fin known as a sail, which often stretches the entire length of the back. The Sailfish is also the state saltwater fish of Florida. Another notable characteristic is the elongated bill, resembling that of the swordfish and other marlins. They are therefore described as billfish in sport-fishing circles. Sailfish are highly prized game fish, and are known for their incredible jumps and great speed.
Red Snapper are one of the Gulf of Mexico’s signature fish. They are extremely popular among recreational fishermen and a prized offering at restaurants and seafood markets, as well as a top predator in the Gulf ecosystem.
A marlin has an elongated body, a spear-like snoutor bill, and a long, rigid dorsal fin which extends forward to form a crest. Its common name is thought to derive from its resemblance to a sailor's marlinspike. Even more so than their close relatives, the scombrids, marlins are fast swimmers, reaching speeds of about 50 mph. The larger species include the Atlantic blue marlin and the black marlin. They are popular sporting fish in tropical areas. This is our "Mad" Marlin!
Catfish are primarily large-river fish that tend to move upstream in the summer in search of cooler temperatures, and downstream in the winter in order to find warmer water. The blue catfish is the largest freshwater sportfish in Texas.
The Mahi Mahi or common dolphinfish is a surface-dwelling ray-finned fish found in off-shore temperate, tropicaland subtropical waters worldwide. Mahi-mahi have compressed bodies and a single long-based dorsal fin extending from the head almost to the tail. Their caudal fins and anal fins are sharply concave. They are distinguished by dazzling colors: golden on the sides, and bright blues and greens on the sides and back. This is one angry Mahi Mahi!
Channel catfish are easily distinguished from all others, except blue catfish, by their deeply forked tail fin. Unlike flathead catfish, the upper jaw projects beyond the lower jaw. The channel catfish is the state fish of Kansas and Nebraska.
